How much does a laboratory technician earn?

The salary of a laboratory technician varies depending on experience, education and the sector you work in. For newly graduated laboratory technicians at secondary vocational education level (MBO), the salary is often between €2,400 and €2,800 gross per month. Did you complete higher professional education (HBO)? In that case, the starting salary is often slightly higher, between €2,800 and €3,200 gross per month.

As you gain more experience, your salary can increase. For experienced laboratory technicians with a secondary vocational background (MBO), the salary can rise to between €3,000 and €3,600 per month. With a higher professional education background (HBO), the salary can rise to between €3,500 and €4,500 per month.

Youth wages may still apply to newly graduated MLO students (secondary laboratory education), which means that their salary may still be slightly lower at a younger age. Ultimately, factors such as the collective agreement, bonuses and sector-specific regulations (for example, chemicals, pharmaceuticals or food industry) can also impact your total earnings.

In addition to the basic salary, you may also receive shift allowances, depending on the sector and working conditions:

10-15% surcharge for 2-shift work (morning and afternoon shifts)
20% surcharge for 3-shift work (morning, afternoon and night shifts)
30-35% surcharge for 5-shift work (morning, afternoon and night shifts, including weekends)
