CV and job application tips
When you apply for your dream job, you naturally want to present the best version of yourself. Here at CheckMark, we want to help you make the best possible impression during your application process. A positive CV, a strong online profile and proper preparation for your job interview are essential. Here you will find our best tips.
A convincing CV
Your CV is often the first thing an employer looks at, and sometimes even the only thing. A clear and convincing CV is therefore crucial. Here are our top tips for creating a strong CV:
1. Keep your CV up to date
Make sure your CV is always up to date and put your most recent work experience and training and education at the top, under the relevant headings.
2. Customise your CV per application
Make sure that your CV matches the specific requirements and wishes of the vacancy text. Use keywords from the job description on your CV and adapt it for each job you apply for. Emphasise relevant experience and skills and leave out any unimportant details.
3. Personalise your CV
Add a professional photo and write a short introduction (max. 3 lines) about your key skills and experience, and what you are looking for in your next job.
4. Apply a clear structure
Keep your CV organised and easy to read. Use a clear font, plenty of white space and clear headings for the different sections. Divide your CV into five sections: personal information, education, work experience, other work experience and additional information.
5. Keep it short and to the point
Limit your CV to a maximum of 2 to 3 pages. Write short sentences and use bullet points. That’s easier to read. Do you have a lot of publications? Include these in a separate appendix and refer to them in your CV.
6. Check the following before submitting
Read your CV carefully before submitting it. Check for spelling and grammar errors. Ask someone else to check it as well and use tools like a spell checker or ChatGPT to correct any mistakes.

Applying for a job: how do I go about it?
During a job interview, you naturally want to make a good impression. Proper preparation is half the battle. Here are our job application tips:
Preparing for your job interview
- Do research: Make sure you know exactly what the position entails and what the company does. Use the company website and social media to prepare yourself well.
- Prepare answers: Think about why you are suitable for the position. What experience and qualities do you have that are valuable to this company and this position? Prepare answers to frequently asked questions such as “Can you introduce yourself?”, “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” and “Why do you want to work for us?”. Practice your answers so that you appear confident and natural during the interview.
- Also prepare questions: Make sure you have some questions ready to ask the interviewer. This shows your interest in the position and the company. This can help the interviewer determine whether the position is a good fit for you.
- Further preparation: Make sure you can explain your CV well. What did you do, how did you work and why did you make certain choices?
Practical preparation
- Things to bring: Make sure you know what to bring to the interview, such as your (digital) CV, diplomas and identification. If you want to take notes during the interview or use notes as a reminder, bring a notebook with you.
- Logistical preparation: Make sure you know where you need to be and plan enough travel time. It is best to be 15 minutes early.
- Well-groomed appearance: Look smart and wear clothing that makes you feel confident and that is appropriate for the position and company. When in doubt, it’s always better to dress slightly too formal than too informal.
After the job interview
- Show enthusiasm: Show your enthusiasm and ask about the next steps in the process.
- Ask for feedback: If you are declined, politely ask for the reason and suggestions for improvement.
