9 years @CheckMark – Ozan Arikan
When I started as a recruiter in Chemistry and Life Science at CheckMark 9 years ago, I had no idea how much impact this would have on me. That switch in career was an exciting step at the time. After 9 years, I can honestly say that it was one of my best choices ever and that I’m still grateful for the opportunity I was given at CheckMark.
I joined CheckMark after studying Molecular Medicine, with a specialisation in stem cell research. During my studies I developed the misconception that the world would be my oyster after graduation, but finding a job turned out to be quite a challenge. One thing was clear: I needed help with my search. I visited CheckMark for an interview, with the idea of finding a research job in the corporate world.
During this initial consultation I was surprised. Let’s be honest, aren’t recruiters these slick and smooth-talking types? This meeting was completely different and I was struck by the warm atmosphere and the involvement of my consultation partner.
Although I immediately thought this could be a pleasant place to work, I hadn’t yet fully considered the career opportunities for someone with my academic background. After all, I was trained to be a stem cell researcher, not a recruiter.

It wasn’t until I saw the vacancy for recruiter that I realised this could be a great fit for me. I decided to give it a try, despite my lack of experience. CheckMark recognised my potential and offered to train me in the field of recruitment. That opportunity transformed my career.
The person behind the CV
A career switch from researcher to recruiter was never on my agenda. What I really like about CheckMark is that I can be completely myself in my new role. I don’t have to become a smooth salesman! Instead I can maintain my authenticity and passion for science. That’s also what makes CheckMark so special: we see the person behind the CV and are genuinely interested.
In the years that followed, I became a senior recruiter and ultimately team leader. When I look back on the past 9 years, I feel especially grateful for the opportunities, the lessons and the beautiful relationships I’ve built at CheckMark. What will the future bring? If it were up to me, there will be another 9 years of challenges to tackle and, above all, successes to celebrate with the team!
